Admission requirements

Qualification admission requirements

Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification.

A Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG

or

a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning and at least 40% in Mathematics or 50% in Mathematical Literacy,

or

A Senior Certificate (NSC) with matriculation exemption or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG

or

a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning and
or
A National Certificate Vocational (NCV) Level 4 with a minimum of 60% in three fundamental courses, including teaching and learning language; and 70% in four vocational subjects chosen from the NCV level 4 disciplines. The following subjects have been approved as being acceptable for a BEd degree: Agriculture and Natural Resource Conservation, Business, Commerce, and Management Sciences Services, Education, Training, and Development, Mathematics, and Natural Science are all offered as First Additional Language levels. Applicants who do not meet the statutory and additional standards should consider applying for a Higher Certificate.

Once you’ve received your student number, pay the application fee:

For online applications, R110

For hard copy applications, R170 is recommended (hard copy applications will only be considered in exceptional cases)

Please note that this application cost is non-refundable regardless of whether you decide not to study at Unisa, do not qualify for admission to Unisa, or are unable to be awarded a spot due to space constraints.

The application model at Unisa is open and continuous, which means that applications are accepted all year.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • During the period 3 January to 7 March 2020, all applications for admission must be submitted online. No self-help stations will be available for applications at the regional offices.
  • Admission to a qualification is not automatic. It will depend on whether you comply with the admission requirements and if space is available.
  • Not all qualifications are available all the time. Only the qualifications where there is space available will be available on the online application form.

Unisa has partnered with a number of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to provide classes in a variety of qualifications. These classes have been shown to boost the throughput rate of students who enroll in them in general.

Take note of the following:

  • Ensure that the TVET college of your choosing provides assistance with your chosen qualification.
  • Apply for admission to Unisa through your TVET college or Unisa during the application period.
